Shipwreck coast is know for its rough waters, lack of lighthouses and thick fogs. Many ships have fallen victim to these inhospitable waters. Perhaps the most famous ship claimed in these rough parts is the Victoria shipwreck Loch Ard. There is a gorge that is named after the ship, it’s called Loch Ard Gorge.

The first recorded ship lost in the area was in the 1500′s and was named Mahogany Ship. After that it was 300 plus years before these waters claimed another ship. An unnamed whale boat went down in these waters in 1836 and started the recent string of shipwrecks.
