St Paul’s Cathedral Melbourne

The St Paul Cathedral in Melbourne, Australia is an important and historical area landmark. This cathedral was built in 1885, and replaced the former St James Old Cathedral. It was built in a Gothic transitional style, designed by English architect William Butterfield. However, William Butterfield resigned from the project, and Joseph Reed over saw the construction and completion of the St Paul Cathedral. The cathedral was built from sandstone, unusual from the majority of the buildings in the area, as the common building material was bluestone. An English imported organ is located within the cathedral, and is reputed as one of the finest surviving pieces produced by T.C. Lewis: One of the greatest organ producers of the nineteenth century. Upon visiting the cathedral, visual interests include The Pentacles (or Five Pointed Star), The beautiful Persian Tile located near the ceremonial doors, and of course the cathedral’s gift shop. The St Paul Cathedral demonstrates beautiful architecture and many other treats for the eyes to behold. Read the full post »

Victoria waterfall

Mosi-o-Tunya (The Smoke That Thunders) or Victoria Falls has been a work in progress for over 100,000 years. Sitting astride the borders of Zimbabwe and Zambia in southern Africa, it is rated as one of the Seven Natural Wonder of the world. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1989, Victoria Falls is arguably the largest waterfall in the world.

Victoria Falls is part of a network of ever retreating gorges and falls that has been formed as the Zambezi River has etched a path through softer sandstone that is a part of the predominant basalt in the Makgadikgadi Pan. David Livingstone (of “Dr. Livingstone I presume.” fame) is credited with being the first European to visit the falls in 1856.

In recent years the falls have become an adventure vacation destination. Spectacular views of Victoria Falls are available from multiple locations in both Zimbabwe and Zambia although continued political unrest in the area could make travel there problematic. Still, to have the opportunity to peer over the edge of the falls from the Devil’s Pool would be an experience of a lifetime.

Victoria Falls easily earns a place as one of the Seven Natural Wonders. With its remote location, one might hope that it will maintain this wonder without undue exploitation. Read the full post »

Photography Umbrella: How, When, Why To Use

An umbrella for photography is used to direct light to a subject. Umbrellas are commonly used for portraits and product photography. They act to soften the harsh light from a flash or light to give a soft, pretty glow to the subject.

Photography umbrellas are a cost effective way to control light for a photo shoot. While it’s possible to bounce light off a ceiling and light an entire room, they are meant more for portraits or close up shots. Umbrellas allow the photographer to direct the light to best flatter the subject. They also soften the light to reduce harsh highlights and shadows.

Umbrellas for photography come in two colors: silver or white. The white can be used to shoot through, but the silver is only used to bounce light. Silver umbrellas can reflect more light than a white umbrella can. The white does give a softer light, but the same effect can be achieved by moving the silver umbrella further away from the subject. Which color you choose is a personal preference, just remember the white will not reflect as much light as silver and you may need to compensate for this when shooting. Read the full post »
